Why Timing Matters
The Vedic understanding of time is not uniform. Different moments carry different qualities — determined by the positions of the Sun, Moon, and planets relative to each other and to the Earth. A Griha Pravesh (house-entry) ceremony performed at a well-chosen muhurat is not guaranteed to produce a particular outcome, but it initiates the home's occupation at a moment whose qualities align with stability, prosperity, and harmony — which is the actual goal.
Months Suitable for Griha Pravesh
Classical Vastu and jyotisha texts specify that Griha Pravesh should be avoided during Chaturmas (the four monsoon months of Ashadha, Shravan, Bhadrapada, and Ashwin), when Vishnu is said to sleep. The preferred months are Magh, Phalgun, Vaishakh, and Jyeshtha — late winter through early summer. Kartik is considered acceptable in some regional traditions. Outside these months, a Griha Pravesh is considered suboptimal but not prohibited if circumstances make delay impossible.
The Five Panchanga Requirements
Tithi: The ceremony should be performed during Shukla Paksha (waxing fortnight), preferably on Dwitiya (2nd), Tritiya (3rd), Panchami (5th), Saptami (7th), Dashami (10th), Ekadashi (11th), Dwadashi (12th), or Trayodashi (13th). Krishna Paksha (waning fortnight) and the 4th, 8th, 12th (in some reckonings), and 14th tithis are avoided.
Vara: Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday are considered auspicious for Griha Pravesh. Tuesday and Saturday are generally avoided; Sunday has regional variation.
Nakshatra: Rohini, Mrigashira, Punarvasu, Pushya, Hasta, Chitra, Anuradha, Uttara Phalguni, Uttara Ashadha, Uttara Bhadrapada, Revati, and Ashwini are favored. The nakshatra occupied by the Moon at the time of entry determines whether the ceremony proceeds.
Yoga: Siddha, Shubha, Amrita, and Brahma yogas are preferred. Vyatipata and Vaidhriti are strictly avoided.
Karana: The ceremony should begin during a Karana other than Vishti (Bhadra).
The Lagna (Rising Sign)
Beyond the Panchanga, the lagna (ascendant) at the moment of entry is examined. Fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius) as the lagna are preferred for a house entry — they imply permanence and stability. Dual signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces) are acceptable; cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn) are generally avoided as they imply a beginning that leads quickly to another beginning, suggesting the household may not remain settled.
Practical Considerations
A skilled jyotishi identifies several candidate muhurats within the acceptable months and then refines by checking for inauspicious yoga periods (Rahu Kaal, Gulika Kaal, Yamaganda), ensuring the Moon is not in the 8th from the natal Moon of the head of household (a formation called Chandrashtama that is specifically avoided for major undertakings), and verifying that none of the family's significant natal placements are adversely aspected on the chosen day.
