The Chart as a Framework

A kundali (Janma Patrika) is not a prediction machine. It is a map of tendencies — the conditions into which a person is born and the archetypal qualities that will recur as themes throughout their life. Reading it well requires understanding what each of the twelve bhavas (houses) actually governs before considering which graha occupies or aspects each one.

The First Six Houses: Self and Immediate World

Lagna (1st House) — The ascendant. This describes the body, the temperament, and the quality of the self that faces the world. It is the single most important factor in a chart because it determines the orientation of all other houses.

Dhana (2nd House) — Accumulated wealth, speech, family of origin, early childhood, and the right eye. A well-placed 2nd house lord supports financial stability and harmonious family relations.

Sahaja (3rd House) — Siblings, courage, short journeys, communication, and the hands. This house describes how a person acts in the immediate environment and their relationship with those closest in age.

Sukha (4th House) — Mother, homeland, property, emotional foundations, and the heart. The 4th house describes what a person considers home — physically and psychologically.

Putra (5th House) — Children, intelligence, creative expression, past-life merit (purva punya), and speculation. A strong 5th house supports learning and artistic capacity.

Ari (6th House) — Health, daily work, enemies, debt, and service. This is an upachaya house — planets here grow stronger over time, often manifesting as hard-won professional competence.

The Second Six Houses: Outer World and Legacy

Kalatra (7th House) — Spouse, partnerships, open adversaries, and trade. The 7th describes the qualities one seeks in a partner and the terms on which one engages the world.

Ayur (8th House) — Longevity, inheritance, sudden transformation, hidden knowledge, and shared resources. This is a complex house: what is inherited here includes both material wealth and karmic debts.

Dharma (9th House) — Father, guru, pilgrimage, higher education, and fortune. The 9th is considered the house of grace — the accumulated benefit of righteous living.

Karma (10th House) — Profession, public standing, authority, and the actions through which one participates in the world. This is typically the most visible house in any chart.

Labha (11th House) — Income from effort, elder siblings, social networks, and the fulfilment of desires. The 11th shows what a person gains and the quality of their circle.

Vyaya (12th House) — Expenditure, liberation, foreign residence, sleep, and loss. A strong 12th can indicate spiritual depth; a difficult one can indicate financial leakage or isolation.

Why a Trained Eye Matters

No house can be read in isolation. The condition of a house depends on its lord, the planets within it, and the aspects it receives. This interaction makes kundali reading a skilled craft rather than a formula — which is why consultation with an experienced jyotishi, rather than a software report, remains the standard for important life decisions.
