The Foundation: Directions as Qualities
Vastu Shastra assigns a deity and a set of qualities to each of the eight cardinal and intercardinal directions. This is not mere mythology — it reflects the practical reality that the East receives morning light, the North benefits from the magnetic field's cooling influence, and the South and West bring afternoon heat. The deities are mnemonic devices encoding observations about how direction shapes experience.
The Eight Directions
East (Indra) — The direction of sunrise, light, and new beginnings. Main entrances are ideally positioned here or in the North to receive morning light and the rising day's energy. Prayer rooms on the east wall are recommended in all classical texts.
North (Kubera) — The direction of wealth and magnetic north. Treasuries, safes, and the family's financial records are traditionally kept in the north or northeast. The north-facing entrance is considered highly auspicious for prosperity.
West (Varuna) — Associated with water and the settling of the day. Master bedrooms in the southwest or west are considered stable; the west is not hostile, but its heavy energy makes it unsuitable for the main entrance or places of active work.
South (Yama) — The direction of Yama, lord of death, which sounds ominous but is better understood as the direction of completion and rest. South-facing entrances are to be avoided in residential construction; the south wall is where heavy furniture, storage, and the bedroom are best placed.
Northeast (Ishanya) — The most sacred corner, associated with Shiva and the highest concentration of beneficial energy in the plot. The prayer room or puja space belongs here. This corner should be kept open, clean, and unobstructed.
Northwest (Vayavya) — Governed by Vayu (air). Guest rooms and storage for commodities are traditionally here — the northwest is a transitional direction, associated with movement and change.
Southeast (Agneya) — Governed by Agni (fire). The kitchen belongs in the southeast, where the cook faces east and the fire element of cooking aligns with the direction's quality. This is also the appropriate zone for electrical equipment.
Southwest (Nairiti) — Associated with Niriti, a deity of dissolution. The heaviest structural elements — load-bearing walls, master bedroom, safe — belong here. This corner should never be open or lightweight.
The Brahmasthan
The center of the plot or structure is called Brahmasthan — the place of Brahma, the creator. In traditional Vastu, this space is kept open, unobstructed, and unbuilt. Modern apartments make this impossible to implement architecturally, but the principle translates: keep the center of your living space clear of heavy furniture and clutter, allowing energy to circulate.
Working with Existing Structures
Most Vastu consultations today deal with homes and offices that cannot be structurally altered. In these cases, the practice focuses on placement — where furniture, mirrors, plants, and water features are positioned relative to direction — rather than construction. The adjustments are more limited than building from scratch but are not trivial: the direction in which you sleep, work, and eat does affect the quality of those activities.
