Griha Pravesh

The sacred ceremony of entering a new home

2–4 hours🌅 Morning, ideally between sunrise and noon on an auspicious muhurta

What is Griha Pravesh?

Griha Pravesh is the Hindu ceremony performed when a family enters a new home for the first time. It is one of the most important domestic rituals in Hindu tradition — a formal declaration that the home is not just a building, but a sacred space blessed for the family's prosperity, health, and happiness.

The ceremony is rooted in the Vedic understanding that a home carries its own energy — and that entering it on the right muhurta, with the right rituals, sets the foundation for everything that follows. Skipping it is not just a missed tradition. For many families, it is a matter of genuine spiritual significance.

Why Griha Pravesh matters

The word Griha Pravesh literally means 'entering the home' (griha = home, pravesh = entry). In Vedic tradition, every space has its own Vastu — the cosmic energy arranged by the structure's orientation, design, and elements. The Griha Pravesh puja aligns the family's energy with the home's Vastu, inviting the blessings of Ganesha, Lakshmi, and the presiding deity of the home before the family takes up residence.

The ceremony also has a deeply practical spiritual purpose: it formally establishes the home as a place of dharma — where prayers will be offered, guests will be welcomed, and family life will unfold with conscious intention.

Step by step

How Griha Pravesh is performed

1

Muhurta Selection

The āchārya calculates an auspicious date and time based on the Hindu Panchang, the family's Rashi (moon sign), and the nakshatra. The muhurta must avoid inauspicious periods like Rahu Kalam, Yamagandam, and certain lunar phases.

2

Purification of the Space

The āchārya performs a Vastu Shanti or space purification, cleansing the home of residual energies using mantras, agni (fire), and specific herbs.

3

Ganapathi Puja

Lord Ganesha is invoked first — as the remover of obstacles — to ensure the ceremony and the family's new life in the home proceed without difficulty.

4

Navagraha Puja

The nine planetary deities are propitiated to ensure they bring favorable influence on the family's life in the new home.

5

Griha Devata Puja

The presiding deity of the home — typically Vastupurusha or the family's Kula Devata — is formally invited into the home and established.

6

Homa / Homam

A sacred fire is lit and offerings of ghee, herbs, and grains are made with specific mantras — purifying the atmosphere and establishing the fire as the center of the home's spiritual life.

7

Entry Ritual

The lady of the house enters first, carrying a pot of water (kalash) and sometimes a lighted lamp. In some traditions, the man of the house also carries the family's sacred fire. A cow is sometimes walked through the home first as a symbol of auspiciousness.

Frequently asked

Griha Pravesh — questions answered

What is the best muhurta for Griha Pravesh in 2026?

Auspicious months for Griha Pravesh include Magha, Phalguna, Vaishakha, and Jyeshtha. Avoid Ashada, Bhadrapada, and Paush. The exact muhurta depends on your family's moon sign and the home's location. Your SanskarSetu āchārya will calculate this specifically for you.

Can Griha Pravesh be done in a rented flat?

Yes. Griha Pravesh can be performed for any new home — owned or rented — that the family is entering for the first time. Some families also perform a simpler Vastu Puja for rented flats.

Can Griha Pravesh be done without the homeowner being present?

Traditionally, the homeowner (or at minimum the lady of the house) should be present. For NRI families who cannot travel, the closest living family member present at the location performs the ceremony while the homeowner joins on video call — a widely accepted practice.

How far in advance should I book the pandit for Griha Pravesh?

Book at least 2–3 weeks in advance. Good pandits fill up fast on auspicious muhurta dates. If you have a specific date in mind, book immediately.

Can Griha Pravesh and Vastu Puja be combined?

Yes. Many families perform both together — the Vastu Puja purifies the space and the Griha Pravesh formally establishes the family in it. Your āchārya will combine them into a seamless ceremony.

How much does a Griha Pravesh pandit cost?

Pandit fees for Griha Pravesh vary by city and ceremony complexity — typically ₹5,000–₹25,000 in India, and higher for ceremonies abroad. SanskarSetu shows transparent pricing before you book.
