What is Annaprāśan?
Annaprashan (annaprashana) is the ceremony of a baby's first solid food, one of the sixteen samskaras. After a short pooja, the child is fed a small amount of rice, usually as kheer or payasam, first by a parent and then by close relatives.
It marks the child's step from milk to food and is celebrated with family and blessings. In some traditions, objects are placed before the child to see which they pick, a playful custom that varies by region.
When should you perform it?
- Commonly in the 6th month, once the child is ready for solid food
- In some traditions, boys at even months (6th, 8th) and girls at odd months (5th, 7th)
- On an auspicious day chosen from the panchang, usually in the morning
- At home, or at a temple, with close family present
