What is Rudrābhiṣek?
Rudrabhishek is the ritual bathing (abhishek) of the Shiva lingam while reciting the Shri Rudram from the Yajurveda. Water, milk, curd, honey, ghee, sugar and other offerings are poured over the lingam in sequence, each with its mantras, followed by bilva leaves and aarti.
Devotees perform it for peace, good health, relief from planetary difficulties, protection, and the removal of obstacles. It is one of the most commonly arranged poojas for Shiva devotees, at home or alongside a temple visit.
When should you perform it?
- On Mondays, which are associated with Lord Shiva, and especially during the month of Shravan
- On Pradosh Trayodashi, Masik Shivaratri or Maha Shivaratri
- On birthdays, anniversaries or before important events, to begin with Shiva's blessings
- When recovering from illness, or when a jyotishi recommends it for graha shanti
