What is Kanyā Pūjā?

Kanya pooja, also called Kanjak or Kanya bhoj, honours young girls as living forms of Goddess Durga. It is performed on Ashtami or Navami during Navratri, when the girls are welcomed, their feet washed, and they are offered prasad, a meal and small gifts.

The pandit leads the invocation of the Devi, the worship of the girls, and the offerings, so the ritual is observed with correct vidhi. Many families also invite a young boy, as Batuk Bhairav or Langur, to accompany the girls.

When should you perform it?

  • On Ashtami or Navami of Chaitra Navratri or Sharad Navratri
  • When concluding a Navratri fast or a Durga pooja
  • On any other day if you have taken a vow to feed and honour girls
  • Typically performed in the morning, after the Durga pooja and havan
