What is Mundan · Nāmakaraṇa?

Mundan (chudakarana) is the first haircut of a child, one of the sixteen samskaras, performed with a pooja and a havan. The shaved hair is traditionally offered, and the ceremony marks a symbolic cleansing and the child's healthy growth.

Namkaran is the naming ceremony, in which the child is formally given a name chosen according to the nakshatra and the family's tradition. Many families perform both with the same pandit, either together or on separate days.

  • At home, a temple or a tirtha, depending on your family custom
