What is Griha Pravesh?
Griha pravesh is the ceremony performed when a family enters a new home for the first time. It formally blesses the house, invites the presiding deities in, and begins the family's life there on an auspicious note.
The ritual usually includes Ganesh pooja, Navagraha pooja, a kalash and a havan, followed by the first entry, traditionally led by the lady of the house carrying a kalash. It is common to pair it with Vastu shanti and, afterwards, a Satyanarayan katha.
When should you perform it?
- Before the family moves in or starts living in a newly built or newly bought home
- After a major renovation, or when moving into a rented home you wish to bless
- On a muhurat chosen from the panchang; many families favour months such as Magha, Phalguna, Vaishakha and Jyeshtha, though this varies by tradition
- Not during periods your tradition treats as inauspicious, such as Chaturmas or Pitru Paksha, which your pandit will check
What is included
