What is Satyanarayan Kathā?

Satyanarayan katha is a worship of Lord Vishnu in his form as Satyanarayan, the embodiment of truth. The pooja is built around a vrat (vow) and the recitation of five chapters of the katha, which tell how devotees who honour a promise and worship with sincerity are blessed, and how those who forget it face hardship.

It is one of the most widely performed household poojas in India and among the diaspora because it is simple, welcoming and suits almost any occasion. The family fasts until the katha ends, the pandit performs the pooja and reads the katha, and the day closes with aarti and the sharing of panchamrit and prasad.

What we need from your family

  • A clean, quiet space for the chowki, ideally facing east
  • The family to be present for the full katha, fasting until it ends if that is your custom
  • Someone to prepare the prasad (halwa) or let us know if you would like guidance
  • Friends and relatives invited to attend if you wish; the pooja is traditionally open to all

Your pandit

Every pandit on SanskarSetu is vetted before joining. Once you book, we match one to your family's tradition and share their details with you.

  • Background and training checked before joining the platform
  • Matched to your region, sampradaya and language
  • Assigned within 24 hours of your booking
  • Arrives with the vidhi prepared and explains each step as it is performed

Mantras are recited in Sanskrit and explained in Hindi or English as you prefer. If your family follows a regional tradition, tell us when you book and we match a pandit who knows it, subject to availability.
