What is Upanayanam?
Upanayanam, also called the janeu or yajnopavita ceremony, is the sacred thread ceremony that marks a child's formal entry into Vedic study. It is one of the sixteen samskaras, and the child is initiated with the Gayatri mantra by the father or a guru.
The ceremony typically includes Ganesh pooja, mundan, a sacred bath, the wearing of the sacred thread, the Gayatri upadesha, and the symbolic first alms (bhiksha). The detailed vidhi differs by sampradaya, so we match a pandit who follows your family's tradition.
When should you perform it?
- Traditionally between the ages of about 7 and 16, depending on varna and family custom
- On an auspicious day chosen from the panchang, often in the Uttarayan period
- At home, a hall or a temple, with relatives gathered
- With enough time for the preparation, since Upanayanam involves several preliminary rites
What is included
- Muhurat selection suited to the child's nakshatra and your tradition
- Full vidhi including the sacred thread investiture and Gayatri upadesha
- Guidance for the family on the child's vow and daily sandhya practice
- A pandit matched to your tradition and language
- Muhurat guidance for the right date and time
