Ganesh Chaturthi celebrates the birth of Lord Ganesha, the remover of obstacles. Families bring home an idol, worship it for a day or several, and then immerse it with songs and gratitude. The festival is observed most grandly in Maharashtra, but it is kept in homes across India and abroad.
Key takeaways
- Ganesh Chaturthi falls on Shukla Chaturthi of the Bhadrapada month. The idol stays for 1.5, 3, 5, 7 or 10 days, and the visarjan is on Anant Chaturdashi at the latest.
- The sthapana is done in the midday (Madhyahna) muhurat given in the panchang.
- A clay (shadu mati) idol is traditional and eco-friendly.
- Modak and durva grass are the classic offerings. Ganesh puja can also be done on any day, especially before another ceremony.
Choosing the idol
- Choose an idol made of natural clay with plant-based colours. It dissolves easily and does not harm water bodies.
- Traditionally, the trunk bends to the left, and the idol is seated. Size does not matter: a small idol is perfectly sufficient for home worship.
- Keep the space in a clean, quiet corner, facing east or north if possible, on a raised platform with a red or yellow cloth.
Preparing for sthapana
- Clean the house and the pooja area. Decorate with flowers, a mango-leaf toran and rangoli.
- Place a wooden or clean cloth-covered platform. Spread rice or wheat on it, and set the idol on top.
- Keep a kalash with water, mango leaves and a coconut beside the idol.
- Arrange the samagri before you start: it should not be hunted for halfway through the puja.
Samagri
- Durva grass (21 sprigs of three blades each)
- Red hibiscus flowers and other flowers
- Modak, laddoo, fruit and coconut
- Roli, akshat, sandalwood, turmeric, kumkum
- Incense, camphor, ghee lamp, betel leaves and supari
- Janeu (sacred thread) and a new cloth for the idol
Our Ganesh Puja kit brings these together.
Puja vidhi
- Sankalp: state the intention to worship Ganesha for the family's wellbeing.
- Pranapratishtha: mantras are chanted to invite the divine presence into the idol. A pandit usually does this.
- Shodashopachara (sixteen offerings): invocation, seat, water for the feet and hands, bathing, clothing, sacred thread, sandalwood, flowers, incense, lamp, food offering, betel, dakshina, aarti, circumambulation and prayers.
- Durva and modak: offer durva grass and 21 modaks if possible, chanting "Om Gam Ganapataye Namah".
- Aarti: sing "Sukhkarta Dukhharta" or "Jai Ganesh Deva".
- Prasad: distribute to family and neighbours.
On the following days, offer fresh flowers, light a lamp, sing the aarti morning and evening, and keep the idol's space clean. A bhog of fruit or sweets can be offered daily.
Chandra darshan on Chaturthi
A traditional belief says that seeing the Moon on Ganesh Chaturthi night can lead to a false accusation, linked to the story of the Syamantaka jewel. Families who follow this custom avoid looking at the Moon that evening. If it happens by accident, the tradition recommends hearing or reading the Syamantaka story. This is a matter of belief and family custom.
Visarjan, the farewell
On the day chosen, offer a final puja and aarti, then immerse the idol with the chant "Ganapati Bappa Morya, Pudhchya Varshi Laukar Ya". At home, an idol of clay can be immersed in a large tub of water, and the water used in the garden once the clay has settled. If immersing in a water body, follow local guidelines, use only natural clay, and remove flowers and decorations first.
Frequently asked questions
Can I keep the idol for just one and a half days?
Yes. Many families keep it for 1.5 days and some for 3, 5, 7 or 10 days, depending on their family tradition.
Do I need a pandit?
You can do it yourself with a simple vidhi, but a pandit helps with the muhurat and Pranapratishtha. You can book a pandit for Ganesh Puja.
Can Ganesh puja be done on other days?
Yes. Ganesha is worshipped first in every ritual, and many families do a Ganesh puja on Wednesdays, Sankashti Chaturthi or before a Griha Pravesh or wedding.
